Dinosaur Birthday Party Ideas

Throw a dinosaur-theme birthday party for your kid, and watch it become a roaring success!

If your child is fascinated with dinosaurs, you’ve got a big job on your hands planning his or her birthday party. It will take a lot of work, but it is creative and interesting to come up with ideas for a dinosaur-theme birthday party. Get to work once he’s outside the house – it will be an awesome surprise for both him and his guests!

Decide how far you’re going to carry the dinosaur theme – will you restrict it only to the food items, or will you go the whole hog and erect a set? Here are some fun ideas to get you started:

– If you want the guests to be part of the fun, you can contact each of the invitees via a special note and tell them to dress in jungle fatigues or explorer jackets and pants to fit in with the theme. You might want to set aside a new uniform for your child – he won’t appreciate being the odd one out at his own party!

– Decide on the menu. That the cake must have either dinosaur icing or a couple of 3D dinosaur figures on it, is a no-brainer. But you could have a whole snack table with edible dinosaur items – a plateful of leaf cookies, chocolate fruits on a small tree (the centrepiece), etc. You can get as creative as you want with this table.

– Get your party favours ready. Decide what you put in the guests’ goodie bags. A good collection of items would be a dinosaur notebook and pen/pencil, a dinosaur T-shirt, an explorer flask that is actually a water bottle, and a pair of binoculars.

– Prepare the set. This is crucial, and you can’t mess this up. Decorate your front yard in a jungle theme and set a table aside on which you can place night vision goggles and binoculars. You will have to move the furniture away from your living room, and create a realistic dinosaur set with trees, figurines, a jungle pathway and sound effects. Rent a compilation of jungle sounds complete with dinosaur cries and roars, and set the lighting of the space accordingly. Your guests will feel that they have walked into a jungle on arrival. Create a treasure hunt around the house, leading them out through the backyard, where you can play several games and give prizes.

– A good idea to keep the kids engaged is to have an ‘excavation site’ in your back yard. Bury chocolate coins, plastic necklaces, even plastic dinosaur eggs that your little guests can dig up and claim. This part of the party will gladden every child’s heart – because it will combine their love for finding interesting things with their love for getting really dirty! It will also be an educational exercise for the kids – they will learn a little about artefacts, exploring, treasure hunting and working in a group.
